History

Cypress High School started off as a Charter School created for the Live Oak District as a way to let kids from Shoreline, Ocean Alternative, and other local middle schools in a smaller setting that would have more interactions between students and staff and a nicer teacher to student ratio. It was approved and started in Spring of 2003, with only 9th & 10th grade and a total of 47 students. The other two grades were added in the next 2 years, and during the first graduation year in 2006 seven diplomas were handed out. In fall of 2019, we officially became a Community High School and ended our Charter with Live Oak.

After a school wide vote in the fall of 2020, the Sea Otter was chosen as the new Cypress High School mascot.

I chose the Sea Otter as our school mascot because at Cypress we have all these groups of people doing things like attending environmental club, the GSA club, and Ethics Bowl, and all the other clubs there at Cypress, just like there are groups of otters swimming around. According to Google, ‘The otter symbolizes friendship, peace, kindness, and family. The otter is also social and mischievous and a symbol of grace, empathy, happiness, and never-ending curiosity.’ I think our school is full of friendship, peace, kindness, and empathy. Our school community is very kind and welcoming to new students.
